Frequently Asked Questions About VSC Fingerprinting

What happens if my fingerprints match a pardoned record?

This is NOT an accusation of criminal activity. Fingerprints are used solely to confirm your identity. The match could be due to similar name and date of birth. Your fingerprints will be destroyed after 90 days.

How long are VSC results valid?

VSC results are typically valid for 6-12 months, but this varies by employer. Some organizations require annual checks, while others accept results up to 3 years old. Always confirm with your employer.

Can I get a VSC if I live outside Surrey?

VSCs must be initiated by police in your jurisdiction of residence. If you don’t live in Surrey, visit your local police department. However, if you’re moving to Surrey for work, contact us for guidance.

Is the VSC different from a regular criminal record check?

Yes! A VSC includes everything in a standard criminal record check PLUS a search for pardoned sexual offences. It’s specifically designed to protect vulnerable populations and is legally required for certain positions.

Surrey Guide to Fingerprinting for NEXUS & FAST Cards | Summer Travel

Planning Summer Travel? A Surrey Guide to Fingerprinting for NEXUS & FAST Cards

With summer just around the corner, many Surrey residents are thinking about one thing: making that cross-border trip to the U.S. as smooth as possible. The key to skipping long border lineups is a Trusted Traveler card like **NEXUS** or, for commercial drivers, a **FAST card**.

You’ve filled out the application, but then you get a notice: you’ve been asked to provide a criminal record check based on your fingerprints. What does this mean, and what do you do next? Don’t let this unexpected step delay your travel plans. As Surrey’s experts in all forms of background checks, we’re here to guide you through this process quickly and efficiently.

A car driving on a highway towards a border crossing with mountains in the background, symbolizing travel.

Why Would I Need Fingerprints for NEXUS or FAST?

While not every applicant needs to provide fingerprints, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will request them if there is any ambiguity in your background verification. This can happen for several common reasons:

  • A Common Name: Your name and date of birth may be similar to someone with a criminal record. Fingerprints are the only way to prove you are not that person.
  • An Incomplete Record: An old charge may not have been updated in the system to show its final disposition.
  • Past Criminal History: Any criminal record, even for a minor offence from many years ago, will be flagged. You will need to provide an up-to-date record.

If you’ve been asked for a “police certificate” or a “criminal record check” to continue your application, you need an **RCMP Certified Criminal Record Check**, which is based on your fingerprints.

Expert Tip: Don’t delay! The processing time for your NEXUS or FAST application is paused until they receive your criminal record check. The faster you get your fingerprints submitted, the faster your application can proceed.

Your Fast-Track Fingerprinting Process in Surrey

At Surrey Fingerprint Company, we specialize in providing the exact document you need for your Trusted Traveler application. The process is simple:

  1. Book a Quick Appointment: Call us at **604-825-8882**. We understand you’re on a deadline and will get you in as soon as possible.
  2. Bring Your ID: All you need are two pieces of valid government-issued ID (one must have a photo, like a Driver’s License or Passport).
  3. Digital Fingerprint Capture: We use advanced, RCMP-accredited digital scanners. The process is inkless, clean, and takes just 10-15 minutes.
  4. Instant Submission to RCMP: We submit your fingerprints electronically and securely to the RCMP’s federal database in Ottawa on the spot. This is the fastest method available to get your record processed.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for NEXUS & FAST Applicants

Do I always need fingerprints for a NEXUS card?

Not always. However, if the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) or U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) cannot clearly verify your background, they will request you to provide a certified criminal record check from the RCMP. This check requires you to submit your fingerprints through an accredited agency like ours.

Where in Surrey can I get fingerprints for my FAST card application?

Surrey Fingerprint Company is your local expert for FAST card fingerprinting. We provide the necessary RCMP Certified Criminal Record Check using fast, digital fingerprint submission to Ottawa. Our office is conveniently located at 112 – 8232 120 Street, Surrey.

What if I have a criminal record? Can I still get a NEXUS card?

Any criminal record can make you ineligible for NEXUS. However, if you have received a Record Suspension (Pardon) in Canada, your chances of approval are much higher. Getting a Record Suspension also requires fingerprinting as the first step, a service we also specialize in.

Get Your Summer Travel Plans Back on Track

A request for fingerprints doesn’t have to be a major roadblock. As Surrey’s specialists in RCMP-accredited fingerprinting, we can help you fulfill this requirement quickly and correctly, so you can get back to planning your summer adventures.

Surrey Criminal Record Check Guide: Police vs. Accredited Agency

A Surrey Resident’s Guide to Criminal Record Checks: Police Detachment vs. Accredited Agency

So, you need a criminal record check in Surrey. You start searching online and immediately face the big question: **”Where do I go? The local police station or a private agency?”** This is the single most common point of confusion, and the answer depends entirely on *why* you need the check.

Getting it wrong can mean wasted time, money, and application delays. As Surrey’s leading RCMP-accredited fingerprinting experts, we’ve created this definitive guide to clarify the process, helping you choose the right path for your specific needs.

First, Understand the Two Main Types of Checks

Before comparing providers, it’s crucial to know what you’re asking for.

1. Police Information Check (PIC)

This is the standard check often provided by local police detachments like the **Surrey Police Service** or Surrey RCMP. It searches national databases (like the Canadian Police Information Centre – CPIC) and local police records for criminal convictions, outstanding charges, and other police contact information. This is often sufficient for general employment, volunteering (that isn’t in the vulnerable sector), and some licensing.

2. RCMP Certified Criminal Record Check

This is the gold standard, official federal background check. It is based on your **fingerprints** and confirms your identity with 100% certainty. The results are certified by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). This type of check is mandatory for all federal and international purposes.

When to Go to the Police Detachment

You should visit the local Surrey Police or RCMP detachment primarily for one key reason:

  • Vulnerable Sector Checks (VSC): If you plan to work or volunteer with children or vulnerable adults, a VSC is mandatory. This is a special type of PIC that also includes a search for any record of sexual offences for which a pardon has been granted. By law, a VSC **must be initiated by your local police force.** In some cases, if your name and date of birth match an existing record, the police may require you to get fingerprinted to confirm your identity, at which point you can come to an agency like ours.

When to Use an RCMP-Accredited Agency Like Us

An RCMP-accredited agency is a private business, like **Surrey Fingerprint Company**, that has been authorized by the RCMP to capture and submit fingerprints directly to the federal database in Ottawa. This is the fastest and most efficient option when you need an **RCMP Certified Criminal Record Check**.

Choose us when you need a check for:

  • Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC): For Permanent Residency, Citizenship, and other visa applications.
  • Record Suspensions (Pardons): This is the mandatory first step of the application process.
  • U.S. Entry Waivers & Visas: For applications that require an FBI background check (using the FD-258 card) or an RCMP check.
  • Federal Government Employment: For security clearances like Reliability Status.
  • Foreign Travel, Work, or Adoption: When another country requires an official police certificate from Canada.

At-a-Glance Comparison

Feature Surrey Police/RCMP Detachment Surrey Fingerprint Company (Accredited Agency)
Best For Local employment, volunteering, and mandatory Vulnerable Sector Checks (VSC). Federal and international needs: Immigration, Pardons, U.S. Waivers, Federal jobs.
Primary Check Type Police Information Check (PIC). RCMP Certified Criminal Record Check (Fingerprint-Based).
Speed for Federal Needs Slower, as it’s not their primary function. Much faster due to direct electronic submission to RCMP in Ottawa.
Vulnerable Sector? Yes, you must start here. No, this must be initiated by the police.

Frequently Asked Questions

Surrey Guide to Fingerprinting for Record Suspensions (Pardons)

Starting Fresh: A Surrey Guide to Fingerprinting for a Canadian Record Suspension (Pardon)

Everyone deserves a second chance. If a past criminal record is holding you back from employment, travel, or educational opportunities, a Canadian Record Suspension (formerly known as a Pardon) can offer a path forward. This formal process allows the Parole Board of Canada to set aside your criminal record, giving you a clean slate.

However, the application process is detailed and can feel overwhelming. Many people in Surrey ask us, “Where do I even begin?” The answer is simple and definitive: **the entire process starts with your fingerprints.** As Surrey’s leading RCMP-accredited fingerprinting agency, we are the essential first step on your journey to starting fresh.

A person looking out over a bright, hopeful sunrise, symbolizing a fresh start.

Why Fingerprinting is the Non-Negotiable First Step

Before the Parole Board of Canada will even look at your application, you must provide them with a certified copy of your criminal record from the RCMP. The only way to obtain this specific document for a Record Suspension application is to submit your electronic fingerprints to the RCMP’s Canadian Criminal Real Time Identification Services (CCRTIS).

Think of it as the foundation of your application. Without this official record, you cannot prove your eligibility or provide the necessary documentation. Starting this step as early as possible is critical, as it can take time for the RCMP to process your record and mail it to you.

Your Path to a Record Suspension: The Surrey Fingerprinting Process

We’ve made this crucial first step as clear and efficient as possible. Here is what you can expect when you come to Surrey Fingerprint Company:

  1. Book a Confidential Appointment: Call us at 604-825-8882. Our team understands the sensitive nature of this process and ensures complete confidentiality and professionalism.
  2. Bring Two Pieces of Valid ID: When you visit our Surrey office, you’ll need two pieces of valid government-issued ID (one must have a photo). Examples include a Driver’s License, BC Services Card, or Passport.
  3. Quick & Accurate Digital Capture: Using advanced, RCMP-approved digital scanners, we capture your fingerprints. The process is inkless, clean, and typically takes less than 15 minutes.
  4. Secure Electronic Submission: We immediately transmit your fingerprints directly to the RCMP. This is the fastest and most secure method available.
  5. Receive Your Record from the RCMP: The RCMP will process your request and mail your Certified Criminal Record directly to your home address. Once you receive this document, you can proceed with the next steps of your Record Suspension application.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fingerprinting for Pardons

What is the very first step to get a Record Suspension (Pardon) in Canada?

The mandatory first step is to get your fingerprints taken by an RCMP-accredited agency, like Surrey Fingerprint Company. These fingerprints are used to obtain a certified copy of your criminal record from the RCMP, which is a required document for your application to the Parole Board of Canada.

Can I start my pardon application without getting fingerprints?

No, it is not possible. The Parole Board of Canada will not process an application without your RCMP Certified Criminal Record, and the only way to obtain that record for this purpose is by submitting your electronic fingerprints.

How long does the fingerprinting step take?

The fingerprinting appointment at our Surrey office is very fast, typically taking only 10-15 minutes. We then submit your prints electronically to the RCMP. The RCMP’s processing time to mail you your record can take several weeks to months, which is why it’s crucial to start this step as early as possible.

Ready to Take the First Step Towards a Clean Slate?

Your journey to a Record Suspension begins here. Let the experts at Surrey Fingerprint Company handle the essential first step with the professionalism, speed, and confidentiality you deserve.

My Fingerprints Were Rejected by the RCMP. What’s Next? A Guide for Surrey Residents

My Fingerprints Were Rejected by the RCMP. What’s Next?

📅 Published: June 6, 2025
👤 By: Surrey Fingerprint Company
📍 Surrey, BC
⏱️ 8 min read
Receiving an RCMP fingerprint rejection notice can be incredibly frustrating, especially when it delays important employment, immigration, or volunteer applications. If you’re a Surrey resident facing this challenge, you’re not alone – and more importantly, it’s completely solvable.

Understanding RCMP Fingerprint Rejections

When the RCMP rejects your fingerprints, it doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you personally. Instead, it indicates that the submitted fingerprint images don’t meet the strict quality standards required for accurate criminal background checks and identification purposes.

The RCMP processes thousands of fingerprint submissions daily, and their automated systems are designed to catch any images that might lead to misidentification or incomplete background checks. This stringent process protects both applicants and employers, but it can create significant delays when fingerprints are rejected.

📊 Rejection Statistics

According to industry data, approximately 15-20% of first-time fingerprint submissions are rejected by the RCMP. However, when done professionally with proper equipment and techniques, this rate drops to less than 2%.

Why Fingerprints Get Rejected: The Most Common Causes

Understanding why your fingerprints were rejected is crucial for preventing future issues. Based on our experience serving Surrey residents, here are the primary reasons for RCMP rejections:

1. Poor Image Quality

This is by far the most common reason for rejection. Poor quality can result from several factors including inadequate lighting during capture, low-resolution scanning equipment, or improper contrast settings. Many walk-in locations use older equipment that doesn’t meet current RCMP standards.

2. Incomplete Fingerprint Capture

The RCMP requires complete coverage of each fingertip, including the areas where fingerprint ridges meet the edges of the finger. Partial captures missing crucial ridge details will automatically trigger rejection.

3. Smudged or Distorted Images

Movement during capture, excessive pressure on the scanner, or improper finger positioning can create distorted fingerprints that fail quality checks. This is particularly common when individuals try to press too hard or move their fingers during the scanning process.

⚠️ Common Surrey Weather Impact

Surrey’s coastal climate can significantly affect fingerprint quality. High humidity can make fingers too moist, while dry winter conditions can make fingerprint ridges less defined. Professional technicians know how to prepare your hands for optimal capture regardless of weather conditions.

4. Technical Submission Errors

Sometimes perfectly good fingerprints are rejected due to technical issues during electronic submission. This can include file corruption, incorrect formatting, or transmission errors that occur between the capture location and RCMP systems.

5. Worn or Faded Fingerprint Ridges

Individuals who work with their hands extensively, have certain medical conditions, or are older may have naturally worn fingerprint ridges that are difficult to capture with standard techniques. Professional services have specialized methods for handling these challenging cases.

What to Do Immediately After Receiving a Rejection Notice

Time is often critical when dealing with fingerprint rejections, especially if you have pending job applications or immigration deadlines. Here’s what you should do right away:

1

Review Your Rejection Notice Carefully

The RCMP rejection notice contains specific information about why your fingerprints were rejected. Look for codes or descriptions that indicate whether the issue was image quality, completeness, or technical problems.

2

Contact Your Original Service Provider

If you used a professional service, contact them immediately. Reputable providers should offer solutions or re-submission services. However, if they used substandard equipment or techniques, you may need to seek alternatives.

3

Assess Your Timeline

Determine how much time you have before your background check deadline. This will help you decide whether to attempt a quick re-submission or invest in professional services that guarantee results.

4

Gather All Documentation

Collect your rejection notice, original application forms, identification documents, and any previous fingerprint attempts. This information will be valuable for professional service providers.

💡 Pro Tip for Surrey Residents

Don’t attempt to re-submit using the same method that failed initially. The same issues that caused the first rejection will likely cause subsequent rejections, creating further delays and frustration.

Professional Solutions Available in Surrey

When dealing with RCMP fingerprint rejections, professional intervention often provides the fastest and most reliable solution. Here’s what professional fingerprinting services can offer:

Advanced Digital Technology

Professional services use FBI-certified digital fingerprinting equipment that captures images at resolutions far exceeding standard scanners. This technology can capture clear images even from challenging fingerprints that have been rejected previously.

Expert Technician Skills

Trained technicians understand optimal finger positioning, pressure application, and capture techniques. They can identify potential issues before submission and make real-time adjustments to ensure quality.

Hand Preparation Techniques

Professional services include hand preparation procedures that optimize fingerprint visibility. This might include gentle cleaning, moisturizing for dry skin, or light powdering for overly moist fingers.

“After two rejections from different locations, I was worried about missing my job opportunity. The professional service not only captured my fingerprints successfully but also explained why the previous attempts had failed. It was worth every penny for the peace of mind.” – Local Surrey resident

Quality Assurance Processes

Before submission, professional services conduct thorough quality checks using the same standards applied by RCMP systems. This virtually eliminates the possibility of rejection due to quality issues.

Guaranteed Results

Many professional services offer satisfaction guarantees, meaning they’ll re-capture your fingerprints at no additional charge if the RCMP rejects them again. This provides security and demonstrates confidence in their process.

How to Prevent Future Fingerprint Rejections

Whether you’re dealing with your first fingerprinting requirement or want to avoid future rejections, these prevention strategies can save time and frustration:

Choose Your Service Provider Carefully

Not all fingerprinting services are equal. Look for providers that are RCMP-accredited, use current digital technology, and have experienced technicians. Ask about their rejection rates and guarantees.

Optimal Timing for Appointments

Schedule your fingerprinting appointment when your hands are in the best condition. Avoid appointments immediately after:

  • Heavy manual labor or construction work
  • Extensive gardening or cleaning
  • Swimming or prolonged water exposure
  • Using harsh chemicals or detergents

Hand Care Before Your Appointment

In the days leading up to your appointment, take care of your hands by moisturizing regularly if they’re dry, avoiding activities that could damage fingerprint ridges, and keeping your hands clean and well-groomed.

🌤️ Surrey Weather Considerations

Surrey’s variable weather can affect fingerprint quality. In winter, use hand cream regularly to prevent excessive dryness. In humid summer months, ensure your hands are clean and dry before your appointment.

Surrey-Specific Considerations

Living in Surrey presents unique considerations for fingerprinting services:

Local Service Availability

Surrey has numerous fingerprinting options, from police stations to private services. However, quality and technology vary significantly between providers. Research local reviews and ask about their equipment and rejection rates.

Proximity to Vancouver International Airport

Many Surrey residents work in transportation, security, or international trade sectors requiring frequent background checks. Having reliable fingerprinting services locally saves time and ensures consistent results.

Multicultural Community Needs

Surrey’s diverse population often requires fingerprinting for immigration purposes, international education, or global employment opportunities. Professional services understand these unique requirements and timelines.

🚨 Emergency Situations

If you’re facing strict deadlines for employment, immigration, or other applications, don’t risk further delays with budget options. Invest in professional services that guarantee results on the first attempt.

What to Expect from Quality Service

When you choose a professional fingerprinting service in Surrey, you should expect:

  • Consultation about your specific needs and timeline
  • Explanation of the process and quality standards
  • Hand preparation to optimize fingerprint capture
  • Multiple capture attempts if needed for quality assurance
  • Real-time quality verification before submission
  • Tracking information and follow-up on submission status
  • Guarantee or warranty on their service

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get results after resubmission?
RCMP processing times vary but typically range from 5-15 business days for digital submissions. Professional services often provide tracking so you can monitor your application’s progress.
Can I get my money back from the original service provider?
This depends on their service agreement and guarantee policy. Reputable providers often offer re-service guarantees or partial refunds for rejections, while others may not. Always ask about their rejection policy before paying.
Will multiple rejections affect my background check or applications?
No, rejections don’t create negative records or affect your actual background check results. They simply delay the process until acceptable fingerprints are submitted.
Are there alternatives to fingerprinting for background checks?
In most cases requiring RCMP background checks, fingerprinting is mandatory and cannot be substituted. However, some applications may accept name-based searches, though these are less comprehensive.
How much should I expect to pay for professional fingerprinting in Surrey?
Professional fingerprinting services in Surrey typically range from $50-$120, depending on the service level, guarantees offered, and additional services included. This investment often saves money compared to multiple failed attempts.
Can weather really affect fingerprint quality?
Absolutely. Surrey’s coastal climate can make fingers too dry in winter or too moist in humid conditions, both of which can cause capture problems. Professional services account for these environmental factors.

A Surrey Guide to FBI FD-258 Fingerprinting

For U.S. Entry Waivers, Visas & Foreign Background Checks

Published by Surrey Fingerprint Co. |

If you’re a Canadian resident in Surrey looking to enter the United States, you may have been told you need an “FBI background check” or an “Identity History Summary.” This process is essential for anyone applying for a U.S. Entry Waiver (Form I-192), certain types of U.S. visas, or adopting a child from the United States.

At the heart of this requirement is a specific document: the FBI FD-258 fingerprint card. Unlike Canadian police checks that often use digital prints, this American requirement has its own unique process. As Surrey’s leading specialists in both RCMP and FBI fingerprinting, we’ve created this guide to demystify the process for you.

The official FD-258 Card requires rolled ink impressions for all 10 fingers.

What is an FBI FD-258 Card and Why Do I Need It?

The FD-258 is the standard fingerprint card used by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for non-federal purposes. When you apply for an FBI Identity History Summary (IdHS)—often called a criminal record check or rap sheet—the FBI requires your fingerprints to be captured on this card using a specific “ink-and-roll” method.

Here in Surrey, our clients require FD-258 fingerprinting for several key reasons:

  • U.S. Entry Waivers: If you are inadmissible to the United States due to a past criminal conviction, you must apply for a waiver (Form I-192), which requires an FBI background check.
  • U.S. Visas & Immigration: Certain visa applications or adjustments of status require a police check from every country you’ve lived in, including the U.S. if you resided there.
  • Foreign Residency or Work Permits: Applying to live or work in another country that requires you to prove you have a clean record in the United States.
  • Personal Review: To check your own FBI record for accuracy.

Crucial Distinction: FBI checks require traditional ink-and-roll fingerprints on a physical card. This is different from the digital fingerprinting used for RCMP checks in Canada. At Surrey Fingerprint Company, we are experts in both processes and will ensure you get exactly what you need.

The Ink Fingerprinting Process at Our Surrey Office

We make this specialized process simple and stress-free. Our trained technicians have years of experience in capturing clear, high-quality ink prints that meet the FBI’s strict standards, significantly reducing the risk of rejection.

  1. Book Your Appointment: Call us at 604-825-8882 to schedule a quick appointment at our Surrey office. We’ll confirm you have the necessary ID.
  2. We Provide the Card: You don’t need to source your own card. We provide official FBI FD-258 cards right here.
  3. Bring Your ID: You will need two pieces of valid government-issued identification (one must be a photo ID).
  4. Expert Ink-and-Roll Capture: A technician will carefully roll each of your fingers in ink and transfer them onto the designated blocks on the FD-258 card. We take meticulous care to ensure every print is clear and fully captured.
  5. Final Review: We review the card with you to ensure all personal information is correct before handing it over, ready for you to mail with your application.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an FBI FD-258 fingerprint card?

The FD-258 is the official fingerprint card used by the FBI for non-federal purposes, such as applying for an FBI Identity History Summary (IdHS). This is required for U.S. Entry Waivers (Form I-192), U.S. visas, foreign residency applications, and other international needs.

Can I use digital fingerprints for an FBI background check?

No, when you are applying from Canada for an FBI background check, you must submit your fingerprints on a physical FD-258 card using the traditional ink-and-roll method. Digital submissions to the FBI are not possible from Canada for this purpose.

Do you provide the FD-258 card?

Yes, we provide the official FBI FD-258 fingerprint card at our Surrey office. You do not need to bring your own.

What happens after you take my prints?

After we capture your fingerprints on the FD-258 card, we provide it to you to mail to the FBI along with your application. We ensure the card is filled out correctly and the prints are clear to minimize any chance of rejection.

Why Fingerprinting is a Must for Your Security License

The British Columbia Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, through its Security Programs Division, requires a fingerprint-based criminal record check for all security license applicants. This is a public safety measure to ensure that individuals in positions of trust do not have a criminal history that would make them unsuitable for the role. It is a non-negotiable part of the application process.

The Fingerprinting Process for Surrey Security Applicants: A Step-by-Step Guide

We’ve streamlined this process to be as simple as possible. Here’s exactly what you need to do:

  1. Receive Your Official Request: First, you must have the official “Request for Fingerprinting” letter/form provided by the Security Programs Division. You cannot get your fingerprints taken for this purpose without this specific document.
  2. Find an RCMP Accredited Agency: You cannot go just anywhere. Your fingerprints must be captured and submitted electronically by an agency that is formally accredited by the RCMP. Surrey Fingerprint Company is a trusted, RCMP-accredited agency located conveniently in the heart of Surrey.

Enhanced Security

Digital transmission is secure and encrypted, protecting your personal information throughout the submission process.
